Almaty is a city located in the foothills of Trans-Ili Alatau. It's surrounded by magnificent mountains and has breathtaking views. The name is derived from the Kazakh word for apple "alma" which can be translated as full of apples. The city was originally called Almatau which means Apple Mountain. The sweetest apples I've ever tried in my life were in Kazakhstan and it's no wonder because Kazakhstan is the motherland of all apples in the world!
